School Nursing

We’re here to help children, young people, and families across Warwickshire stay happy and healthy. Our school nursing team provides confidential advice, care and support to children and young people through their school years and into young adulthood – up to age 25 for individuals with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

You’ll see our team in schools, Family Hubs, community settings, and sometimes through home visits. We work closely with parents, carers, schools, other local services to make sure families get the right support at the right time, focusing on early help and prevention.

As a service, we:

  • Promote public health and healthy lifestyles.
  • Safeguard children from harm and reduce risk taking.
  • Provide health education and advice.
  • Participate in national campaigns and initiatives e.g. National Child Measurement Programme.
  • Work with children and young people who have complex medical needs

Whether you need guidance, reassurance, or extra support, we’re here to help. Most importantly, we aim to help children grow into confident, healthy young people who are ready to learn and thrive.

Slough Child and Family Wellbeing Reception Year Health Review

The school entry health review is a routine check that takes place when your child starts school. It looks at their health, growth and development, and helps identify any support they might need early on so they can get the most out of school.

Get support or make a referral

We’re here to support the health and wellbeing of all school-aged children. If you’re concerned about a child, or think they would benefit from extra support, you can refer them to the School Nursing Team.

Anyone can make a referral: parents, carers, school staff, health professionals, and young people themselves are all welcome to get in touch.

You can refer a child or young person for help with:

  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Healthy lifestyle advice
  • Managing long-term health conditions
  • Support with relationships or bullying
  • Health concerns affecting school, home, or social life

If you’re unsure whether we can offer support for a particular health or wellbeing concern, please contact us and we’ll be happy to guide you.

Education & Health Professionals

If you need support to complete a referral, contact us and we’ll take the details and get you the support you need.

Parents, carers and other agencies

  • We accept self-referral from parents, carers and young people
  • Contact us and we’ll take the details and get you the support you need

What happens after making a referral?

Our school nurses will look over the referral and decide the most appropriate next steps. This may include contacting the referrer for more details. A member of our team will then contact the family directly to discuss support options, arrange an appointment, or offer advice.

Keeping things confidential

School nurses are here to offer children and young people a safe, confidential space to talk about their health, worries, or anything affecting their wellbeing. We provide advice, care and support in schools and community settings, and always work respectfully with families.

Our service is confidential, which means that what a young person shares with us stays private. The only time we may need to share information is if we believe they or someone else is at risk of harm. If this happens, we will explain why and who we need to speak to.

Depending on their age and understanding, young people may be able to give their own consent to talk to a health professional. We always aim to involve them in every decision about their care and respect their right to be heard.

Mental Health Crisis Support

The School Nursing team is here to listen, support, and offer advice. However, if you or a young person is experiencing a mental health crisis or is at immediate risk of harm, it’s important to get urgent help from the right place.
